The following rules are very important in keeping your orthodontic treatment on a proper timeline.
Clean Teeth & Appliances at All Times
Brush teeth and appliances with a soft nylon brush, gently, so as not to bend appliance or injure gum tissues.
Brush your teeth after eating. This includes snacks between meals, even if you’re at school.
Check your teeth after brushing and make sure they are clean. Leave no debris at the gumline or in any of the hard-to-reach areas. If these spots aren’t kept clean it will cause decay and also white lines on the teeth. Remember – it is the food particles around your appliances that cause the white lines.
Take Care of Your Appliances
Do not bend, break or lose parts of the appliance. Locks may work loose – if this happens, call us right away.
Check the bands daily to see if they are loose. Stress of the appliances because of careless eating or improper care of the appliances may loosen a band.
Remember – loose bands are dangerous and will cause decalcification of the teeth. Also, one day with a lost lock or bent wire may take 7 days to repair.
Keep Appointments & Be On Time
If you can’t come to your appointment, call us beforehand.
If you miss an appointment, call us for another one.
Failing to keep appointments and follow directions may result in improper tooth movements and treatment lasting longer – with extra costs.
Remember – appointments are valuable. Respect them.
Correct Eating Habits & Diet
DO NOT EAT – candy, nuts, popcorn, pastry and starchy foods or lifesavers.
DO NOT chew gum.
DO NOT DRINK – beverages that contain sugar.
EAT WITH CARE – applies, carrots or hard food. These must be cut up in small pieces, put in the back of the mouth and chewed.
DO NOT bite into a sandwich. Cut it and put it in the back of the mouth and chew thoroughly. Do not swallow food in large pieces.
